Nikolai Demidenko’s passionate pianism means that he is in demand worldwide. Russian born and trained, he is proud to have been granted British Citizenship in 1995. Frequent London recitals have included the Great Performers series at the Barbican Concert Hall and the International Piano Series at South Bank Centre. Recently he played a recital in the London Pianoforte Series at Wigmore Hall. This was featured as the only live performance in BBC Radio 3’s Chopin Experience, a weekend celebration of his complete works.
Demidenko is renowned for his authoritative performances of the Russian concerto repertoire such as Prokofiev, Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky. He has worked with many conductors and orchestras throughout the world. With the St. Petersburg Philharmonic and Yuri Temirkanov he maintains a flourishing relationship. They perform together regularly. He enjoys a fruitful collaboration with several Russian artists who have also made their homes in London. He has a cello and piano duo with Leonid Gorokhov and plays piano quartets with the exciting new Hermitage String Trio. There is also a two-piano partnership with Dmitri Alexeev. Like Demidenko, Alexeev studied at the Moscow Conservatory under Dmitri Bashkirov. Concert highlights in recent seasons include appearances with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Hallé Orchestra and Sinfonia Lahti. There were also tours in the UK and Ireland with the Prague Symphony Orchestra and in Spain with the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine.
Nikolai Demidenko’s repertoire is wide-ranging including Bach, Clementi, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Mussorgsky, Scarlatti and Liszt. In 1992 he recorded the CD Nikolai Demidenko plays Liszt. In 2011 he was already part of the International Jury of the Liszt Competition.
