Alexander Rinnooy Kan

 
Prof. dr. Alexander Rinnooy Kan (1949) studied mathematics at Leiden University and obtained his degree in econometrics from the University of Amsterdam. In 1976 he gained his doctorate in mathematics from the University of Amsterdam. At the Erasmus University Rotterdam he became professor of operational research in 1980, director of the Econometric Institute in 1983 and rector magnificus in 1986. From 1991 to 1996 he was chair of the employers’ organisation VNO (since 1995 VNO-NCW). Between 1996 and mid-2006 Rinnooy Kan was a member of the board of directors of ING Group. From 2006 to 2012 he was president and crown-appointed member of the Social and Economic Council of the Netherlands. Since 2012 Rinnooy Kan has been University Professor of Economics and Business Studies at the University of Amsterdam.
